Background of the study
University libraries play a crucial role in supporting academic success by offering user education programs that equip students with the skills needed to navigate complex information landscapes. In Ikere Local Government Area, these programs are tailored to enhance information literacy, research competencies, and effective utilization of library resources (Olatunji, 2023). User education initiatives encompass orientations, workshops, and training sessions aimed at demystifying library operations and maximizing resource accessibility. The integration of digital tools in these programs has further augmented their relevance, ensuring that students are well-prepared to engage with both traditional and electronic resources. Despite significant efforts, challenges persist in terms of student engagement and the adaptability of programs to evolving information needs. This study assesses the effectiveness of university library user education programs in Ikere, exploring the correlation between such training and improved academic performance, and identifying key areas for program enhancement (Babatunde, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although university library user education programs in Ikere are designed to boost academic performance, many students do not fully engage with these services. Factors such as infrequent training sessions, limited interactive components, and inadequate follow-up support contribute to suboptimal outcomes. Consequently, there remains a gap between the intended benefits of user education and actual student proficiency in information management. This study seeks to identify these shortcomings and propose strategies to enhance the effectiveness and appeal of user education programs, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of students (Femi, 2024).
Objectives of the study
To evaluate the effectiveness of university library user education programs.
To identify challenges affecting student engagement with these programs.
To recommend improvements to enhance user education outcomes.
Research questions
How effective are current user education programs in improving library use?
What challenges hinder active student participation in these programs?
What enhancements can be made to improve program effectiveness?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of user education in fostering academic success. The findings will inform university administrators and library professionals on refining training approaches, ultimately leading to better student engagement and improved research skills (Segun, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to the topic only.
